European Parliament Elections: Center-Right EPP Group Maintains Majority

Voters Give Gains to Right-Wing Parties

Center-right candidates in the European Parliament elections gained additional seats, solidifying their position as the largest voting block in the EU's main legislative body.

Led by German politician Ursula von der Leyen, the European People's Party (EPP) maintained its lead in the elections, increasing its number of seats in the Parliament. The gain reflects a broader trend of support for right-wing parties across Europe, some of which have adopted nationalist and anti-immigrant platforms.

The EPP, a centrist Christian-democratic group, remains the largest voting bloc in the European Parliament, with a majority of seats. Von der Leyen is currently the favorite to succeed Jean-Claude Juncker as President of the European Commission.

The elections, held from May 23 to 26, saw voters across the 28 EU member states cast their ballots for the 751 members of the European Parliament. The results have implications for the future direction of the EU, including ongoing negotiations on Brexit and the bloc's handling of migration and other key issues.
