Blenheim Boy Makes Good In Sydney

Mick Patrick - A Kiwi Motorcycling Legend

Blenheim Boy Makes Good in Sydney

Mick Patrick John Wood, a Kiwi New Zealander from Blenheim, arrived in Sydney in around 1979 and quickly made a name for himself in the Australian motorcycle racing scene.

Patrick was a talented racer, and he soon began winning races in the Australian Championship. He was also a popular figure in the paddock, known for his friendly personality and his willingness to help others. In 1982, Patrick won the Australian 250cc Championship, and he went on to represent Australia at the FIM Road Racing World Championship the following year.

Patrick's career was tragically cut short in 1984 when he was killed in a racing accident at the Isle of Man TT. He was just 26 years old. Patrick's death was a huge loss to the motorcycle racing community, and he is still remembered as one of the greatest Kiwi riders of all time.

In the years since his death, Patrick's legacy has lived on. In 2002, he was inducted into the Motorcycling Australia Hall of Fame. And in 2019, a memorial trophy was created in his honor. The Mick Patrick Trophy is awarded each year to the top-performing Kiwi rider in the Australian Superbike Championship.

Mick Patrick was a true pioneer of Kiwi motorcycle racing. He was a talented racer, a popular figure in the paddock, and a true gentleman. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of Kiwi riders for years to come.
